Abstract The natural convection flow of an incompressible viscous fluid in vertical channel is analyzed when the channel is subjected to isothermal and adiabatic conditions. The governing equations are solved using the Laplace transform method. Since it is difficult to invert the solution from the Laplace domain to the time domain, the Riemann-Sum approach is employed to do the inversion, thus obtaining the temperature, velocity, skin-friction and rate of heat transfer. In order to validate the Riemann-sum approach used, the steady state solution for velocity and temperature are obtained analytically and the result is compared with the transient case for large value of time. The influence of the various parameters is extensively discussed with the help of graphs. It is interesting to note that an excellent agreement is found between the steady state solutions and the transient solutions at large values of time. Keywords: natural convection: adiabatic/isothermal: heat generation: suction/injection.
