IMPLEMENTATION OF FINDINGS FROM RESEARCH IN MATHEMATICS EDUCATION: THE NIGERIAN CASE

In this article, a case is made for a balance and increasing research work in mathematics education. This is against the backdrop of indispensability of mathematics in the development of every society and its citizenry. To this end, the scientific method of inquiry must be seen as an effective instrument, the use of which can impact positively in solving problems that are possible in the teaching and learning of mathematics in systematic ways. It is the implementation of findings from research in mathematics education that will no doubt help in ensuring positive growth and development in the area of mathematics as well as other fields, especially science and technology. This paper discussed research in mathematics education, performance of students in mathematics and methodology of mathematics pedagogy in Nigeria. It also dived into the implementation of finding from mathematics education and problems of implementation. It was suggested among others that agencies like Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), National Mathematical Centre (NMC), Curriculum Organization of Nigeria (CON), Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN), Colleges of Education and Universities collect and review researches in mathematics education for possible implementation in all tertiary institution in Nigeria. In addition, the government should give mathematics education research an immediate attention through funding and implementation of findings from the numerous researches carried out yearly.
