THE EFFECT OF COOPERATIVE LEARNING STRATEGY ON STUDENTS? ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN MATHEMATICS

Abstract The study determined the effect of co-operative learning strategy on students Academic Achievement in mathematics. Data were collected from One hundred and Forty-Four (144) Juniour Secondary School Class three (JSS3) students randomly selected from five secondary schools out of the twenty-five secondary schools in Epe Local Government Area of Lagos State using Achievement Test in Mathematics. The selected students were generated for the study. A post Mathematics Achievements Test were administered on the subject after treatment for three weeks (3) weeks. A t-test statistics was employed in analyzing the data obtained from the study. Result from the study revealed that students taught mathematics using cooperative learning strategy achieved more in mathematics content than students who were not, the high ability students were significantly better than the average and low ability students, while the average ability students were significantly better than the low ability students, and male students were not significantly better than their female counterparts in academic performance when they were taught Mathematics using cooperative learning strategy.
