DEVELOPMENT OF MATHEMATICS MOTIVATION SCALE USING FACTOR ANALYSIS

Yusuf F. Zakariya

Abstract The study was embarked upon because a direct instrument for measuring mathematics motivation among secondary students is lacking in the literature. A one-shot survey design was used involving 439 secondary school students randomly selected. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was carried out to determine the number of factors in the Mathematics Motivation Scale subcategories. The factors were extracted using principal component analysis and the pattern matrix was rotated to improve the interpretability of the factors using Varimax with Kaiser Normalization which converged after 13 iterations. The final 24-item MMS contained five subcategories and the reliability coefficient of the instrument was .89 with sufficient evidence of content and face validity. MMS is recommended for measuring senior secondary school students? anxiety towards mathematics. Keywords:Motivation; performance: factor analysis; principal component analysis; Varimax Rotation.
