TEACHER CONSULTATION AND TIME SCHEDULING AS DETERMINANTS OF MATHEMATICS STUDENTS ACHIEVEMENT IN DELTA STATE TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS, NIGERIA

Ugboduma, Samuel Ogheneovo (Ph.D)

Abstract The study investigated mathematics students? teacher consultation and time-scheduling and how they determine their achievement in Delta State tertiary institutions, Nigeria. Specifically, the purpose of the study was to determine the degree and nature of relationship among students? teacher consultation, time scheduling, and how they determine mathematics students? academic achievement. Two research questions and two null hypotheses were examined in the study. The correlation survey research design was adopted in the study and the population consisted of 309 first year regular mathematics students in all the five tertiary institutions in Delta state, Nigeria running mathematics in the 2016/2017 session. Yaro Yamane formula was used to determine the sample size of 174 representing 56.31% from 309. Proportionate stratified random sampling technique was used to obtain the sample size for each of the five tertiary institutions in this study. This was done by multiplying the 56.31% across the strata. Data collected from 174 subjects with the aid of 11-item Teacher Consultation and Time Scheduling Assessment Questionnaire (TCATSAQ) was analysed using simple regression to test the hypotheses; while, Pearson?s product moment correlation (r) to answer the research questions. It was found that there was significant correlation between time scheduling of mathematics students and their academic achievement in mathematics; while, teacher consultation has no significant relationship. The proportion of variances of time-scheduling were 55% attributable for mathematics students? academic achievement; and 8% for teacher consultation showing that it has little influence on mathematics students? academic achievement. On the basis of these findings, it was recommended, among others, that mathematics students? should be encouraged to adopt effective teachers? consultation in order to love mathematics concepts learning. Also, adequate utilization of mathematics students? time scheduling in personal study should be promoted through proper counselling to enhance good academic achievement.
