A SURVEY OF PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHERS? ATTITUDE AND COMPETENCE TOWARDS TEACHING MATHEMATICS IN OGUN STATE

ABSTRACT The study investigated the Primary school teachers? attitude and competence towards teaching Mathematics in Ogun State. One research question and two hypotheses were formulated. This study adopted descriptive research design. The population for this study comprised all Nigerian primary school teachers in Ogun state. A total of 168 teachers participated in this study. A multi-stage sampling technique was adopted for the study. Two instruments were constructed and validated the researcher for collecting data (Mathematics Teacher?s Attitude Scale and Instructional Competence Rating Scale). Their reliability Coefficient values were 0.78 was determined, using Cronbach Alpha formula and 0.92 using inter-rate reliability of Scott pie?s formula respectively. The data collected were subjected to frequency counts, means, percentages, rank order and t-test formula. Results showed that shows that there was significant difference between Male and Female Primary school teachers? attitude to Mathematics (t = 4.538, P< 0.05) and there was significant difference between Male and Female Primary schoolteachers? Competence in teaching Mathematics (t = 2.587, p < 0.05). Among the recommendations, Female primary school teachers teaching mathematics should be encouraged to develop more positive attitude to and competence in the teaching of Mathematics.
