MATHEMATICS EDUCATION IN NIGERIA: CURRENT ISSUES AND CHALLENGES

Abstract Mathematics is a core subject usually offered at lower basic, upper basic and even higher institution levels of the Nigerian educational system. Its application is seen and felt virtually in all disciplines; education, pharmacy, engineering, nursing, architecture, accountancy etc. Unfortunately, it is faced with so many challenges, despite its usage and application. This paper therefore X-rayed mathematics education in Nigeria: current issues and challenges. Concept of education and mathematics education were discussed. Objectives and history of mathematics education in Nigeria were highlighted. Current issues and challenges of mathematics education were also highlighted. Recommendations were made such as that provision of facilities should be by a combined efforts of government, parent teachers? association and school administrators and that mathematics teachers should be involved in decision-making and mathematics curriculum planning.
