Abstract Poverty situation in Nigeria has worsened despite the huge human and material resources that 00have been devoted to poverty reduction by successive government in Nigeria with no substantial success achieved from such efforts. Successive Nigerian governments in the past have put up policies aimed at putting smiles on the faces of the governed. Despite all attempts, the problem of poverty continued to escalate. This paper therefore, explored mathematical literacy as one of the ways through which poverty could be reduced in the society. Mathematical literacy could be applied by imparting learners with poverty- reduction skills through engaging them in the learning of Mathematics. Through mathematical literacy, students would be made to understand and acquire commercial and entrepreneurial skills so that they may be at parallel with poverty. Mathematical literacy is a pivot through which many policies could be translated into real life situation and whose profound impact could be noticed if carefully utilized for proper policy formulation and implementation.
