Abstract This study examined the influence of economic recession on the performance of Mathematics students in Ekiti State Tertiary Institutions. Four research questions were generated to guide the study. The study was a descriptive research design of the survey type. The population comprised 18,500 undergraduates of Faculty of Science, Ekiti State University and Federal University of Oye. A total number of 400 undergraduates were randomly selected from the Department of Mathematics in the two Universities using purposive sampling technique. Self-designed instruments titled Economic Recession and Mathematics Performance Questionnaire (ERAMPQ) and Mathematics performance test (MPT) were used. The face and content validity of the instruments were ensured. The reliability coefficient of 0.72 and 0.65 were obtained for ERAMPQ and MPT respectively with the use of split ? half method. Pearson?s Product Moment Correlation, t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were used to test the research questions. The findings revealed that, economic recession has influence on students? performance in Mathematics because they could not afford needed materials for the smooth running of their academic pursuit, thereby not allowing them to have full concentration on their academics. Based on the findings, it was recommended that government should find a lasting solution to bad economy of the nation and also, society at large should find alternative way of improvising in order to better their ways of living.
