ABSTRACT This study investigated the effects of a teaching strategy called ?Friends and Enemies? Teaching Strategy on senior school students? achievement in Directed Numbers. The study employed a quasi-experimental design which involved a pre-test, post-test control group design. The sample for the study comprised of 198 junior secondary school 1 students drawn from two randomly selected co-educational schools in Gwagwalada Area Council, Nigeria. The research instrument was Mathematics Achievement Test (MAT) containing items constructed by the researchers. The test?retest method was employed to determine the reliability of the test instrument. The Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (r) was 0.86. Data collected were analyzed using, mean scores, standard deviation, charts, t-test and ANCOVA. The finding of this study revealed that there was a significant difference in the achievement of students taught Directed Numbers using ?Friends and Enemies? Strategy and the students taught using traditional methods in favour of the students taught using ?Friends and Enemies? Strategy. The study also indicated that there was no significant difference in the achievement of students based on gender. It was therefore recommended that mathematics teachers should use strategies such as ?friends and enemies? strategy, that will encourage the active participation of students in mathematics classes to enhance meaningful learning. Students should be taught Directed Numbers using the ?Friends and Enemies? Strategy since it has proved to enhance better achievement. Male and female students should be given same opportunity and attention in the teaching and learning processes of mathematics. Perceived low ability students should not be neglected in the process of teaching and learning of mathematics. Every learner in the classroom should be carried along during mathematics class. Key words: Friends, Enemies and Achievement.
